Stock Rising- Werth

Jayson Werth has played well over the last few weeks as his fantasy stock continues to rise.

Analysis: We know Jayson Werth was never going to live up to that $126 million contract but at least he is starting to hit again. Werth has 11 hits in his last eight games including 5 extra base hits. He also has 8 runs, 7 RBI and 1 home run on his current eight game hot streak. His batting average is back around his career average but his speed numbers do not appear to be returning any time soon. Werth stole 19 bags in 2011 and 8 bags last year in just 81 games. This year Werth has 2 stolen bases in 51 games played. Even when healthy the thirty-four year old is no longer a five-cat stud but he still has a place in the fantasy world.

Werth is hitting either second or fifth in the Washington batting order which is a great place to be with a healthy Ryan Zimmerman and Bryce Harper. With this in mind his run and RBI totals should be solid going forward as his stock continues to rise. At the moment Werth is available in 15-35% of fantasy leagues.

Jayson Werth’s Return Near

Washington National’s outfielder Jayson Werth is several games in to his return with minor league clubs Potomac and Syracuse.

Analysis: Jayson Werth may not be worth the money that the Nationals spent on him but he will produce when healthy. He’s in a lineup with Ryan Zimmerman, Bryce Harper and Michael Morse, so the RBI opportunities with be plenty. Werth is expected to make his return at some point next week so now is the time to be vigilant on the wire. Werth is available in over half of fantasy leagues which is a big shock considering he is a solid power bat. Manager Davey Johnson has hinted that Werth may be splitting time with Harper out in center field but they pay him too much money to sit on the bench. Werth most likely will push Harper to center and find a home for himself back in right field.

For those on the fence concerning Werth’s fantasy value, keep in mind that he has averaged 25 home runs and 18 stolen bases over the past four years. He’s not going to win any batting titles but his OBP and slugging percentage is very good outside of a down 2011 season.

Buying Low- Jayson Werth

Jayson Werth is being dropped from some fantasy rosters across the country but there is reason to hope.

Analysis: Over the past month or so Jayson Werth has seen his batting average dip thirty points and he has not homered. However, in Werth’s last two games he is 4-8 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored. Regardless of being overpaid by Washington in the offseason Werth is still a solid fantasy option in the outfield and you do not have to look further than his last three years with the Phils averaging nearly thirty homers and seventeen stolen bases to see why. This year Werth is only hitting .212 with ten homers but if his last two games are an indication of things to come then Jayson Werth is back. All of his stats are in line with what he was doing in Philly except for his slight power outage hitting in Washington and his unusually low BABIP. Now is the perfect time to buy the slugger low and what is not to love about that talented lineup he is hitting in? Espinosa, Morse and Zimmerman are all studs and when Werth turns it around many will regret straight up dropping him from their fantasy squad.
