Passing On JR Smith

JR Smith has been playing above average basketball recently but he still has very little fantasy value.

Analysis: JR Smith is averaging 15.8 points and 2.4 threes made over his last five games. Aside from those stats he hasn’t done much other than continuing to play in a big media market. Thus far this season Smith is shooting 36% from the field, 61% from the line and 35% from three. He is the 66th rated fantasy shooting guard this year and the 37th best over the last two weeks. It’s amazing he is doing all this playing 32 minutes per game and only missing a handful of games this season.

Currently, JR Smith is available in 20-30% of fantasy leagues. If you need some shooting guard help you may want to consider Jodie Meeks. Meeks is shooting better from three and averaging 38 minutes per night in the month of January. Meeks is available in 15-30% of leagues. Kyle Korver is also available in some leagues and he is shooting a significantly better percentage than Smith from the field, the line and from three. Korver is also outperforming Smith in blocks and steals and is even with Smith in rebounds and assists.

Three Ball Help- Meeks/Green

Jodie Meeks and Gerald Green are both having career years and it starts with the three ball.

Analysis: Jodie Meeks is averaging a career high 14 points per game and a career high 2.2 threes made per game this year. Over his last five games Meeks is averaging 38.4 minutes, 19.2 points, 2.6 threes, 3 assists, 3 rebounds and 1.6 steals. Meeks is currently 13th in the NBA in threes made this year and 5th among shooting guards.

Thus far this month Meeks is the 10th rated fantasy shooting guard. He’s averaging over 20 points and 2.5 threes made per game this month. Currently, he is available in 35% of fantasy leagues.

Gerald Green is another shooter on the rise this month. Green is the 28th rated fantasy shooting guard in the month of January and he has been outperforming guys like Kevin Martin, Jamal Crawford and Bradley Beal this month. Green is averaging 15 points, 1.9 threes, 4 rebounds and 1.6 steals this month in about 32 minutes of action per night.

Thus far Green is 7th in the NBA in threes made this year and 4th among shooting guards. Gerald Green is available in 15-40% of fantasy leagues.

Selling High- Jodie Meeks

Jodie Meeks is one hot shooting guard at the moment, but you cannot count on him in anything other than deep leagues.

Analysis: Jodie Meeks has hit fourteen threes in his last five games. That’s 2.8 threes per game and you can understand why he has his place in deeper leagues. However, Meeks doesn’t produce in any other fantasy category to make him viable. Meeks rarely gets to the free throw line nor does he shoot well from the field at 44% for the 2011-12 season. Meeks also gets over twenty-six minutes of floor time per game yet he doesn’t average 10 PPG or 1 SPG or even 1 APG.

On the positive side of the coin you really cannot argue with fourteen threes in five games. You also have to like that he has been rebounding rather well as of late. Meeks is averaging 5.2 rebounds per over his last five contests and if he can give you 3.5-4 rebounds per game he may have a small role on some fantasy squads. Meeks is one hot player right now and I cannot imagine his stock getting any higher than it is at the moment. It’s time to sell high on the shooting guard that is still available in seventy percent of fantasy leagues.

Jodie Meeks Is On Fire

Jodie Meeks has knocked down 22 threes his last nine games and is a must add in deeper leagues.

Analysis: Jodie Meeks is one of the more streaky players in the NBA but when he’s hitting his jumpers the fantasy world takes notice. He’s available in over ninety-five percent of leagues and he’s going fast. Meeks is shooting over fifty percent from the field in Febuary and is a career 86% free throw shooter. Add in 8 steals and five 14 plus point games in his last seven contests and you have a solid under the radar shooting guard playing on a mediocre team. Jodie Meeks is on fire and we don’t know how long it will last but we do know if you need threes he supplies them in bunches.

Projection: Even if Meeks cools down a bit he’s still going to knock down 2 threes a game and he won’t hurt you in field goal percentage or points either. Expect 25-30 minutes a game from here on out with about a steal per game.
